How to Prepare for A-Level Maths: The Ultimate Guide to Getting an A or A*

A-level mathematics is a tough subject. Thousands of students invest hundreds of hours reading and marking their books and watching worked solutions annually, yet they are not rewarded with the grades they deserve. It’s not that he is not working hard enough. The question is not to be how the subject is studied, but rather how it is taught.

A Level Maths is not about passive reading but rather about being able to master the structure and learn to retrieve ideas and to be precise. If you are studying Edexcel, AQA or OCR, then you need to progress from revision to problem solving to get top grades (A or A*).

1. Deconstruct Your Exam Specification (The 80/20 Rule)

Before picking up a book for an examination, download the exact specification for your exam board (Edexcel, AQA or OCR). Examiners can only test what is explicitly written in these documents.

The 3-Colour Audit

For each of the topics in your specification, colour code each line:

  • Yellow: The concept is understood but difficulties arise when a question is worded awkwardly or mixed with other issues.
  • Red: You freeze, use mark schemes liberally, or don’t have the theory.

3. The 3-Stage Past Paper Strategy

Without going to full papers too early the student will become frustrated. Rather, try out your past paper practice in three separate stages:

Phase 1: Topical Practice (Building Foundation)

Finish a set of questions which are all related to the same topic (e.g., all 15 integration by substitution questions). This develops the pattern sense and procedural memory.

Phase 2: Untimed Full Papers (Developing Reasoning)

Attempt full past papers without a clock running. Clearly, practice only problem-solving reasoning! If you are stuck, work around for 10–15 minutes before looking at the mark scheme.

Phase 3: Timed Conditions (Pacing & Stamina)

  • Time Allocation: Try to allocate 1 minute to each mark (eg, 100 minutes for a 100-mark paper). This means 20 minutes of systematic double-checking at the end.
  • Zero Distractions: No textbook, no formula booklet searching (unless permitted), no phone.

 

4. Implement a Systematic Error Log

The best tool to progress from Grade B to A/A* is an Error Log. The thought of marking a paper and reading through the answer provides a misleading sense of competence (recognition bias). Each time you lose marks, record the error in your own book or spreadsheet in this way:

The last month before your first paper should be spent on review and rapid learning:

  • Memorise Formula Boundaries: Be familiar with the formulas that will be given in the official formula booklet and those that will be memorised (e.g., certain trig identities and integration forms).
  • Use Your Advanced Calculator: Know how to use your calculator on the level of computing probabilities of a normal distribution, definite integrals and solving equations; be able to instantaneously verify manual working.
  • Check the Error Log Daily: Go over your past errors every day to make sure you don’t fall into the same traps again.
  • Timed Practice: Sit 5 to 8 full papers with the strict timed conditions to develop the mental stamina and practice for two-hour papers.
